The American Lung Association says it has identified “three major” smoke-free areas in the country.
It says Washington, D.C., Chicago and St. Louis have “an extremely high prevalence of tobacco smokers,” while Philadelphia, Baltimore and Hartford have “a high prevalence.”
The numbers are based on a new survey conducted by the American Lung Associations, which is an advocacy group that works to reduce smoking and improve the health of the American public.
The survey found that in D.J. and Baltimore, there were a total of 498,967 smokers in 2014.
The report notes that in the suburbs, which are in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania, there are a total 787,856 smokers.
Louis, there have been more than 1.2 million smokers in the city since 2001, according to the report.
The numbers could be affected by the arrival of new smokers into the city, said Jennifer Foy, an associate professor of public health at the University of California, San Diego, and the lead author of the study.
Foy noted that many smokers move to areas with higher density of new residents, such as Philadelphia.
But in places with low densities, there could be “significant population growth in the area” of new smoker populations, Foy said.
The cities of Washington, Denver and Chicago were among the areas with the highest percentages of smokers.
Washington, where there are no new smokers, has an overall rate of nearly 16 percent, the highest in the nation.
The city’s smoking rates were 13.5 percent in 2014, compared to a rate of 4.2 percent in Philadelphia.
Chicago has a similar rate of 15.9 percent, while Washington had a rate that was 11.8 percent, according the study, which was released Thursday.
Philadelphia, with the third-highest rate in the study among the 20 U.S. cities with the lowest percentages of new tobacco smokers, had the fifth-highest total rate.
Among the 20 cities with a smoker population above 10,000, Washington ranked fifth, with 976,068 people.
Philadelphia was second, with 836,567 people.
The New York City metro area has the fifth highest smoker population, at 1,058,065 people, according Topping the list was Atlanta, with 1,094,788.
In the city of Philadelphia, the average daily smoking prevalence was 19.6, compared with the national average of 26.2.
Baltimore had the second-highest smoker population at 22.1, with 767,979 people.
Chicago had the third highest at 21.9, with 693,848 people.
Hartford had the fourth highest at 19.8, with 562,932 people.
St. Charles had the lowest smoker population of the 20, at 17.2, with 496,636 people.
